Michael Abelson, M.A. - Interim Chair of Department of Focused Inquiry

Michael Abelson began teaching Focused Inquiry in 2007 and assumed the role of Interim Chair for Department of Focused Inquiry in Fall 2021. In addition to teaching UNIV 111, 112, 200, and 299, he has has served in several different administrative positions in the department. He served as GTA Coordinator for the department from 2009-2017 and I was elected Associate Chair in 2018. In collaboration with colleagues in Focused Inquiry, Mike has given presentations related to collaborative course planning and strategies to encourage self-reflective writing in the undergraduate writing classroom.

Previously, he taught English at the University of Ostrava and Masaryk University in the Czech Republic. While in the Czech Republic, he also worked as a translator and led an English-language theater program in Ostrava.

Mike earned an interdisciplinary B.A. in Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Iowa and a M.A. in Educational Policy Studies, specializing in Comparative Education, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is currently a doctoral candidate in the Ed.D. in Leadership program here at VCU with an anticipated graduation date of May 2022.
