Katy Hanggi joined the Department of Focused Inquiry in July 2022. Before joining VCU, she served as Chair of the English Department and Co-Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Doane University in Crete, Nebraska. In both 2018 and in 2020, she was awarded NEH Humanities Connections grants to design and create intentional pathways through general education that connect students’ interests in health sciences with a foundation in the humanities. In 2019, she co-led a short-term study abroad trip to China, and in 2016, she participated in a Fulbright-Hays Seminar Abroad to Senegal, where she studied religion and diversity in West Africa.

Katy earned her Ph.D. in English and a Certificate in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Emory University, an M.A. at Boston College, and a B.A. at the University of Minnesota— Twin Cities. She also earned a Certificate in Digital Pedagogy for her postdoctoral work at Georgia Institute of Technology.
