New Student Orientation

Welcome to Virginia Commonwealth University!

It is our pleasure to invite you to New Student Orientation (NSO) at Virginia Commonwealth University. NSO is a required program for all incoming students and serves as your introduction to all that VCU has to offer. You have made a wonderful choice to attend VCU and we look forward to meeting you!

Program Highlights

  • Orientation Leaders (OLs) will provide the inside scoop on academics, involvement and social life at VCU.
  • Academic advisors will inform you about your area of study and register you for classes.
  • Faculty and staff will expose you to campus resources and opportunities for involvement.
  • Time with your Orientation Team (O-Team) will help you get to know some fellow Rams.
  • You will get your official VCUCard (student ID) and have time to take care of any campus business.
  • All your questions will be answered so you can feel confident about starting this new chapter in life.
  • You will participate in your first VCU tradition and become an official Ram!

Students admitted for the spring will attend NSO during the winter before classes start in January.  Students admitted for the fall will attend NSO during the summer before classes start in August.

When you sign in to the Orientation registration website, you will see the dates available for your major. Review your calendar before making a reservation. Several dates are available, but register as soon as possible as sessions are limited to a certain number of participants and seats fill up fast!  After completing your online reservation and payment, you will receive a confirmation email providing additional program information such as arrival time, where to park and what to bring with you.

If you do not see a date you are able to attend, contact us at (804) 828-3700 to see if we have other options.

Your NSO schedule is determined by your NSO date and status as a first-year or transfer student. Three different programs are offered:

RAMReady: a full-day (8:30 AM – 5:00 PM) program for First-Year students and their families

TRANSFERmation:  a full-day (8:30 AM – 5:00 PM) program for Transfer students and their families

TRANSFERmation Express*:  a half-day (11:30 AM – 5:00 PM) program for Transfer students who are non-traditional, have completed more than 30 credits, or have full-time career or family responsibilities

*Note: The TRANSFERmation Express program is abbreviated and will require you to seek out campus resources outside of NSO.

Parent and Family Orientation

Parents and family members play an important role in their college students’ development and education. We believe that college can be a collaborative experience involving the student, the family of the student and the faculty and staff of the university. We hope that by taking advantage of the programs designed specifically for parents and family members during NSO, families will become better informed about the university’s academic programs, policies, facilities and services while also learning how to be involved as a new member of the RamFam.

Online reservations with payment are required. The fee paid upon making a reservation is non-refundable.
