Writing Center

Who we are.

The Writing Center is a peer-based learning support service for currently-enrolled VCU students. Our primary focus is to help students become the strongest writers possible. As such, we do not edit or proofread papers, but rather discuss big picture issues such as structure, organization, and how to best articulate your ideas. Come talk to us and discover the benefits of having a conversation about your writing before turning it in!

Where to find us.

We are located at 1000 Floyd Avenue, on the 4th floor of the Academic Learning Commons.

Writers need readers.

Why? Because your professor shouldn’t be the first person to read your paper. At the Writing Center, our consultants offer you an additional set of eyes, an additional perspective on your work, before anyone stamps a grade on it. We are here to be your readers and listeners, regardless of what discipline you’re in or what project you’re working on.

We’re trained to help you sort out what you want to say, and how you want to say it, so that it makes sense to your readers and clearly expresses your ideas. Stop by for a one-on-one consultation to see what a conversation with one of us can do for you.

A note about appointment times.

While we schedule our appointments in hour-long blocks, your actual appointment time will be 50 minutes. We ask that you please respect this time frame and our consultants when they begin to wrap up your session. We must stick to this appointment length to ensure the overall smooth running of our Center, including being able to see all students on time.

Students are allowed one appointment per day up to three days a week.

Please note: except for group projects, only one student and one assignment or project per appointment slot.

We appreciate your cooperation in these scheduling matters!

Choose Your Consultation Style!

In person

Of course. To schedule a one-on-one, on-site appointment, click on the Schedule an Appointment link, call (804) 828-4851, or stop by our reception desk. We do take walk-ins as we can, but appointments are preferred–it’s the only way to guarantee you will be seen at the time you choose. Please note: you can not schedule in advance for the new MCV campus satellite center as appointments there are walk-in only.

Online

Absolutely. We do need at least an hour’s advanced notice for online appointments. Information for scheduling an online session is available here: Online Consultations. You can also read more about our online service and how it works. You schedule an online appointment as you would an in-person consultation–just make sure to specify that you want an online appointment.
